Honey Festival - April 5 & 6
In the 1870s, pioneer settlers found an abundance of hollow trees and caves filled with honey in the modern-day Uvalde area. The area was also found to be rich in guajillo (huajillo) bushes, a key source of the nectar needed for the honey that Uvalde now famously produces. Honey was shipped all over the world from Uvalde. The bees provided wonderful honey and play a very important role in pollinating local crops.
Legend has it, that during the 1905 World’s Fair, Uvalde was honored as the Honey Capital of the World. This was the last time this title was given out. With that title never challenged, and the vast production of honey in the area, the annual Uvalde Honey Festival honors that title.
The Uvalde Honey Festival starts on Friday, April 5 with vendors and local live musical entertainment. On Saturday, April 6 has a 5K run, Breakfast with the Bees, vendors, performances from the Sahawe Indians and Ballet Folklorico, musical entertainment, Honey Bake-off and local businesses stay open for shopping. The Honey Festival will take place in and around Uvalde's Downtown Plaza, located at the intersection of Hwy. 90 and Hwy. 83, just across from the Uvalde County Courthouse (west of the Courthouse).
There will be a Honey Queen and Princess that will be announced. They will each receive a scholarship.
Local honey is found throughout Uvalde and the County. Some local stores are The Blinged Buck, Amy’s Attic, Edward’s Furniture, Southern Lace, Juliens a Lifestyle Store, Country Gardens and Seed, Minits Convenience Stores, and many other stores.
